Barbara Sumwalt Historical Museum (239-283-9600; http://useppahs.org), Useppa Island Club, Bokeelia. Open daily 12–2 (open until 3:30 in March and April, closed most Mondays in September). $5 donation requested for visitors older than age eighteen, which includes audio tour. The wee island of Useppa is stuffed to the gills with history, a fact that calls for a historical museum all its own. This one is exceptionally well presented for such a small place. (It helps that wealth outmeasures square footage on the island.) Dioramas are interpreted via taped presentations that you can listen to on personal players as you tour. They describe the island’s Calusa history, its fishing and resort eras, and its role in training revolutionaries for the Cuban Bay of Pigs confrontation in 1960. Its newer exhibits deal with damage the island suffered in 2004’s Hurricane Charley. Because the island is owned by a private club, visitors must be island guests or guests aboard the Lady Chadwick luncheon cruise to the island (see Captiva Cruises under “Boats & Boating: Sight-seeing & Entertainment Cruises”).

MUSIC & NIGHTLIFE Downtown Fort Myers is trying to metamorphose into a hot entertainment district featuring jazz bars, bistros, nightclubs, and street festivals, including a first Friday Art Walk and third Friday Music Walk. As for the islands, Fort Myers Beach is definitely the most hopping. On Sanibel and Captiva you’ll find a quieter brand of partying; nightlife there is focused on theater and more highbrow forms of music, with a couple of bars featuring contemporary live music. Friday’s Gulf Coasting supplement to the News-Press covers the region’s entertainment scene.
